Summary
Networks and Markets
In his recently published Economy of Renaissance Florence, Richard Goldthwaite describes how the Florentine economy and its position in later medieval and early modern or pre-capitalist Europe were developed by the Florentine network outside Florence:
In short, many more Florentines must have taken their chances in foreign trade, and numbers alone can explain greater geographical diffusion and growth of a more extensive, denser trade network abroad than merchants from small places could possibly have formed among themselves … By their sheer numbers, not to mention the density of the network they built up among themselves, Florentines eventually shoved the other Tuscans out of the markets where they did business.
Goldthwaite refers to expanding social and commercial relations, which he calls without any further definition a ‘network’. This ‘network’ came into existence from the thirteenth century onwards and reached its greatest extent during the 1330s in England, and again in fifteenth-century Bruges and early sixteenth-century Lyon. With regard to any of these Florentine communities, we observe a varying situation in terms of numbers of merchants from Florence and a significantly changing density of network indicators. In the later sixteenth century it tended towards a gradual constriction which marks a slow decline in the performance of the Florentine trans-regional economy.
The dimensions of Goldthwaite's network are to be understood geographically.

In this contribution, we report on the optimization of a metal-organic decomposition (MOD) ink based on silver(I) complexes by a systematic variation of the ink formulation. As a result, three different ink concepts turned out to be printable and resulting in a sufficiently high contour definition, layer homogeneity, and conductivity. The ink concepts include increase of the solid load, the usage of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) as a humectant with low vapor pressure, addition of co-solvents such as diethylene glycole and addition of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) as stabilizing ligand. It turns out that, for silver precursor concentrations of 40 wt%, the addition of 1 wt% SLS to aqueous inks leads to elevated conductivity up to 3.2x107 Sm-1 at maintained printability and an improved contour definition with respect to pure aqueous inks.

The electrical transport properties of β-FeSi2 single crystals have been investigated in dependence on the purity of the source material and on doping with 3d transition metals. The transport properties included are electrical conducticvity, Hall conductivity and thermopower mainly in the temperature range from 4K to 300K. The single crystals have been prepared by chemical transport reaction in a closed system with iodine as transport agent. In undoped single crystals prepared with 5N Fe both electrical conductivity and thermopower depend on the composition within the homogeinity range of β-FeSi2 which is explained by different intrinsic defects at the Sirich and Fe-rich phase boundaries. In both undoped and doped single crystals impurity band conduction is observed at low temperatures but above 100K extrinsic behaviour determined by shallow impurity states. The thermopower shows between 100K and 200K a significant phonon drag contribution which depends on intrinsic defects and additional doping. The Hall resistivity is considered mainly with respect to an anomalous contribution found in p-type and n-type single crystals and thin films. In addition doped single crystals show at temperatures below about 130K an hysteresis of the Hall voltage. These results make former mobility data uncertain. Comparison will be made between the transport properties of single crystals and polycrystalline material.
